M3U Playlist & Xtream Codes Explained: Set Up IPTV on Any Device
What Is an M3U Playlist?
An M3U playlist is a simple text file that lists your live channels and on-demand content. Think of it as a playlist that tells your player exactly where each stream lives.
You'll usually receive it as a single URL from your provider — for example http://your-provider.com/get.php?username=...&password=...&type=m3u_plus. Paste that URL into a player and your channels load automatically.
M3U vs M3U8 — What's the Difference?
M3U8 is simply the UTF-8 encoded version of an M3U playlist. In practice, players treat them the same, so you don't need to worry about the difference.
What Is Xtream Codes (XUI)?
Xtream Codes is a login system used by most modern IPTV services. Instead of a long playlist URL, you get three pieces of information:
- Server URL — the portal address (for example
http://portal.example.com:8080). - Username — your account login.
- Password — your account password.
Enter these into any player that supports the "Xtream Codes API" (IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate, XCIPTV and most others) and it automatically pulls your channels, VOD and EPG.
M3U vs Xtream Codes: Which Should You Use?
- Use Xtream Codes whenever possible — it's faster to set up, auto-loads the EPG and VOD, and is less error-prone.
- Use M3U if your player doesn't support Xtream Codes, or if you want to edit and customise your own channel list.
How to Add an M3U Playlist or Xtream Codes Login
- Open your player app on FireStick, Android TV, smart TV or phone.
- Choose "Login with Xtream Codes API" and enter your server URL, username and password — or choose "Add playlist / M3U URL" and paste your playlist link.
- Tap Login or Add and wait for the channels to load.
- Check the EPG (TV guide) and try a 4K channel to confirm everything works.
Troubleshooting Common Login Errors
- "Invalid login" — check for typos; usernames and passwords are case-sensitive.
- "Connection timed out" — your ISP may be blocking the port. Try a VPN or a different server.
- "No channels" — the playlist type is wrong (use
m3u_plusor the Xtream Codes API option). - EPG empty — wait a few minutes and refresh; some players need a manual EPG URL.
