Dolby Vision vs HDR10+ for IPTV: What Is the Difference?

HDR10+ and Dolby Vision both beat plain HDR10, but they are not the same thing — and your TV decides which one you get.

The base layer: HDR10

HDR10 is the baseline every HDR TV supports. It uses static metadata: one brightness setting for the whole film, which works but is a compromise.

The upgrade: dynamic metadata

  • HDR10+ — adjusts brightness scene by scene, and is royalty-free.
  • Dolby Vision — also adjusts scene by scene, with a wider supported brightness range on many premium TVs.

Both are better than HDR10; the difference between them is smaller than either versus plain HDR10.

What your TV needs

HDR10+ and Dolby Vision both require the TV and the source to support the format. Many TVs support one or the other, not always both. Check your TV's spec sheet.

Does it matter for IPTV?

For most IPTV content, a well-encoded HDR10 stream already looks great. Dolby Vision matters most on premium films mastered for it; live sport rarely uses it. Do not buy a TV around this alone — but if you already have it, use it.
